When you first meet Dave, you know you’ve met a genuine person, someone who says it like it is and means what he says.  Dave also has a propensity for giving, kindness, and assisting those who need a helping hand – probably from behind the scenes.  Dave isn’t the kind to flaunt his acts of goodwill. He is content in the knowledge that someone has benefitted on his behalf. Dave is a board member for Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands.

Dave tells us when he first retired from his quality control job at Northern Cables he was looking to donate his time for a worthwhile venture.  Suzanne, his wife who was already volunteering at Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands Brockville ReStore convinced him that this was an excellent cause. She then suggested that he might enjoy giving back to the community by offering his services there.

That is exactly what he did.  The year was 2015.

Dave started to work in what is termed ‘the back room’.  The back room is where donations must be tested to make sure that they are operational and may need adjustments and cleaning before display on the showroom floor.  Every Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the spring, winter and fall you will see Dave checking appliances, moving equipment and performing general clean up.  He enjoys what he does and finds the people he works with especially interesting and always fun. He has made close friends there and knows that what he does is very much appreciated.

But Dave felt the need to make a bigger difference to Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands so in 2016 he applied to become a member of the board of directors. Now Dave serves on the build committee, building to budget and often under budget.  Every build Dave sets a target that he wants to see happen and every time he has met his target with dollars to spare.

Dave knows how important a decent home to live in is to a waiting family.  He also knew that there was an exceptional amount of effort expended into making the home come together.  That is when he realized they needed to hire a site supervisor to make sure tasks were done on time, within budget and always to code.  The site supervisor has become the glue needed to make the build a reality.

Dave says it is all so worth it on the day the family gets the key to their new home.  He says that he can see the pride in the children’s eyes.  Now, they have a decent, affordable home that they can call their own and he says that he feels a lump form in his throat every time this happens.

By donating your slightly used treasures to the Habitat for Humanity Brockville ReStore you are saving landfill sites from receiving needless waste and when you purchase these treasures at our ReStore you are helping a family get a decent home that they deserve.  Just ask Dave. He will tell you how important your efforts are and how grateful we are too.

Dave is one of many who contribute time, effort and financially to Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands.  Without their generosity and support the many that need help would have nothing.  Please consider a giving gift in whatever way you can to make the Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands cause your own.
